Intro to Responsive Design

When a layout works across all devices and screen sizes, it is known as having a responsive layout. Responsive design is the practice of building layouts so that the design and accessibility remain intentional on any device.

The following video shows a Builder page at different sizes. When building responsively, each screen width maintains its integrity and usability.

Concepts for responsive Builder layouts

Creating layouts in Builder gives you a way to build with no code, and Builder generates the code as you work. Whether you build a layout entirely by hand coding or with a drag-and-drop editor, browsers ultimately calculate layout with one set of rules. Because of this, a basic understanding of how browsers interpret what you build can help you create layouts more efficiently and successfully.

The following articles show you how to plan, create, and adjust layouts with responsiveness in mind.

  • The Box Model: learn how browsers see layouts and how to plan your own
  • How Width Affects Layout: read about how different width settings on a block can change how the block behaves
  • Margin and Padding: learn what margin and padding are and when to use them
  • Using Columns for Responsiveness: discover how Builder's built-in Columns block adapts to different screen sizes automatically. You can build entire pages with Columns.
  • Fixing Layouts: check out this article if you have a layout that needs help responding appropriately to different screen sizes.
